18.04 HWE stack causes Thinkpad button problems

Liam Proven
I installed the HWE stack on my Thinkpad X220. This might have been
unwise; everything was working fine.

Now, the middle button no longer causes scrolling, and I can't tap to
click on the trackpad.

Anyone else having problems?

BTW, I traced and fixed this.

I no longer had the driver installed after the HWE update. I installed
the new version:

xserver-xorg-input-synaptics-hwe-18.04

... as the old one (xserver-xorg-input-synaptics) had problematic dependencies.

2 reboots and it worked. First reboot, I couldn't log in -- it froze.
This may be related to me experimenting with my trackpad on the login
screen... :-/
