Ubuntu Community,
As you know, Chile was victim of a devastate earthquake and tsunami. See my country so destroyed is very shocking and sad. Until now, almost all the members of Ubuntu Chile were reported alive with minor material losses, but we have many friends and family who have lost everything. I am writing to ask you to keep us in your minds. The Ubuntu community is more than just people programming, translating and triaging bugs, we are much more than that, we are hands creating and sharing, now I ask you to share with us your strength, because we need them. So please, pray for us, whatever their belief, we need today more than ever be in the Ubuntu's circle of friends. Thanks Cristian Barahona G. I can't pray as I'm not religious, but I'll think about you anyway (as well as about people in Haiti and other places where people suffer). Cristian, My heart goes out to all of you! Please know that you, the Chilean LoCo team and all those who are now dealing with devastating aftermath of the earthquake and tsunami are in the hearts and minds of the North Carolina LoCo team. May you all have the strength, wisdom and courage to make it through each moment as you face the task of picking up the pieces. May you all feel encircled by the thoughts, words, actions and compassion of the Ubuntu Community and that "Circle of Friendship" it represents. When I learned of the earthquake and saw the damage that you are now having to repair my heart sank, today when I read your email my eyes teared up. The Ubuntu Community is in fact as you describe, so much more than an operating system, it is a circle of friends indeed and without meeting you, I am as concerned for you and the Chilean LoCo team as I would be for the LoCo team I belong to here in North Carolina. As much as we celebrated the success within the Ubuntu Community, may we also find time to pause and show compassion in times like this. You and the whole Chilean LoCo team will be in our thoughts! We know that the devastation does not disappear from one moment to another, but Chile already are not thinking in the destruction to think about reconstruction. It will be difficult and will take us years. Thank you for your words of support, which have been received by our community. In Chile this 3 and 4 of March, we are doing a "Telethon" to raise money. Hi,
We can do more than simply think about, pray for and throw money at. The past several weeks I've been one of hundreds of volunteers participating in CrisisCamp Haiti. This past weekend, the DC group (and several others) morphed into CrisisCamp Haiti/Chile. The CrisisCamps evolved from BarCamps ("unconferences") for the purpose of putting techies to work, primarily on FOSS projects to help people on the ground during crises. In particular, the work done at the camps on the Open Street Map project has been getting a lot of kudos from search and rescue teams on the ground in Haiti. So, see if there's a CrisisCamp near you, and either join or start one.
