So Installing the newest version of Ubuntu is stumbing me quite a bit. To first rule out CD drive and image corruption I did download a fresh copy of UNetbootin and it to no avail does nothing. I'm looking around for an image of 10.04 to see if it will install, not much hope. Ubuntu is currently installed on this machine but it does not boot, 10.10 broke it. Parts are as listed below.
Intel Core 2 Quad Q9550 @ 2.83GHz 4.00 GB Dual-Channel DDR3 @ 533MHz ASUSTeK Computer INC. P5E3-WS-Pro 1024MB GeForce GTX 550 Ti (ASUStek Computer Inc) 977GB Seagate ST31000524AS ATA Device (SATA) 977GB Western Digital WDC WD10EALS-00Z8A0 ATA Device (SATA) 78GB Western Digital WDC WD800JD-22LSA0 ATA Device (SATA) (Boot Drive and drive for *Nix Optiarc DVD RW AD-7261S ATA Device Scarlett 2i2 USB Creative 1616 Anything there look like it could be a system breaker? Any Ideas? Thanks, Mark -- ubuntu-ca mailing list [hidden email] https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-ca |

Hmm... none of your hardware looks like it would be causing an issue. How far into the boot process do you get? Do you get to a GRUB screen listing OSes (I'm assuming you are planning to dual-boot right?)

OS wise I already have Ubuntu installed, I'm looking to remove 10.10 and install 12.04. When I attempt to install I get the inital UI (Just the BG no install options) and then the ISO fails.

So you are planning a completely new install of 12.04? If the ISO is failing I would say you need to download a new ISO. Personally I would go the bootable DVD option rather than using UNetbootin. (You can also try the Wubi route if neither of those work).

I've been trying to do that, all have failed upon starting the install screen. (like the screen where you can select memtest, etc

Huh. I guess, you can no longer boot into your Ubuntu install without a bootable CD? If you could run the LiveCD/LiveUSB, then we could try to get the installation working from there or at least be able to get some information about the problem. :( Because one thing that comes to mind if you could boot regularly into your 10.10 install is just to upgrade up to 12.04...

You misunderstand a tad. When I try to put in a new 1204 cd, the installation does not start, I get no options, just a blank screen. I tested with linux Mint, and it at least throw error codes.

It's quite likely the GTX 550. The most likely solution is to use
nomodeset. Press "e" on getting the Grub menu. Using the arrow keys, navigate to, and delete, quiet and splash and type the word nomodeset in their place. Press Ctrl-x to boot. hi this is john from Ubuntu kootenay BC do you have a laptop or tower and what is the model I found that the beast copy of Ubuntu for me was this year Edubuntu 12.04 . The reasons is because In the install menu it has a choice of what desktop environment you want to load . It offer the new Ubuntu desktop or the old GNOME desktop . I have installed the GNOME desktop i find it more efficient and also more simple to use . I also have installed this copy of Ubuntu on many other computer that add difficulty accepting the new desktop but worked well with the GNOME desktop.
