Nexenta OS (a/k/a GNU/OpenSolaris) borrows a bit "too much" from Ubuntu?

Scott-22
I guess they do say that "imitation is the sincerest form of flattery"
but you'd think Nexenta could have, at the very least, come up with a
logo of their own?

Check this out:

OR

if the above link doesn't work.

So it seems that really the main problem is logos in the update manager
and that sort of thing, really that just comes from importing various
packages without changes, I'm sure over time they'll try and sort things
like that out but it's hard to get taht all out in the first round.

Cheers,

It is a new and upcoming project. It is still evolving. Why not appreciate their efforts, instead of criticizing for a trivial thing like a logo ?

Personally, i feel, that the Herculean task of porting GNU apps to solaris is very nice on their part.

Rohan.

PS: Sorry Trent, i didnt mean it as a P.M. to you. I just clicked on "Reply" in GMail :)

It's not really their fault.

Interestingly, there was a Nexenta team created on Launchpad:
https://launchpad.net/people/nexenta

Currently only contains one member, but he is a well-known one :)

Someone's observant :-). I've wanted someone to port Ubuntu / Debian to
OpenSolaris for a long time (in fact we considered doing this ourselves)
so I'm glad that Alex & co are doing it. We've offered them some support
and I hope they will collaborate with the ubuntu dev team - Launchpad
should help w.r.t. bug & patch coordination.

The whole internet?  I have to say most of it is spam, so it gets kind
of boring :)

But you should see my monthly bandwidth bill...

To be honest, porting GNU apps to /any/ Unix platform has never been
terribly herculean. Sun have implemented most of the glibc extensions in
their libc, which makes things even easier.

That's not to say that Nexenta is something that can be produced easily
- it's a fairly significant amount of effort, and I'd like to see their
work benefit people. I'd also like them to actually respond to my
queries about licensing rather than ignoring them, but...

The real bug here is not their fault, but Ubuntu's fault for letting through
distro-centric branding in the applications rather than keeping it in the
ubuntu-artwork/branding packages.

This is a much a problem when it comes to *wanting* other people to derive
from Ubuntu.  ...Before Linspire (or Edubuntu, or Foo) start deriving from
Ubuntu they are going to have to be able to get a clean (unbranded) package
set to work from.

Agreed. This is why I have always asked for ALL distro branding,
including Debian and Ubuntu branding, to be put somewhere simple and
consistent. It's pervasive and largely unnecessary.

Interesting.  Any thoughts on the Nexenta-GPL Controversy?  From what
I've read what Nexenta is doing isn't permitted under the GPL.

It's certaily a common practice.
