Try Ubuntu 17.10 from USB installation disk crashes

David L
On one of my computers (motherboard=M5A99FX PRO R2.0), Ubuntu 17.10 crashes when attempting to "try ubuntu without installing".  It prints a call trace:

Not sure I typed all that in correctly... here's a picture:

I put the hard drive into another computer and installed 17.10 there and then reinstalled it in the one that wouldn't boot to USB and it hangs during boot.  I haven't been able to verify that the problem is the same... I'm not seeing the call trace.

What BIOS version do you have?

The latest is 2501:

https://www.asus.com/us/Motherboards/M5A99FX_PRO_R20/HelpDesk_BIOS/

I recommend updating the firmware and trying again.

Yes, I had already done that.  I had 2301 before and I upgraded to 2501 and tried again before I reported the problem.  No joy.

Also, I forgot to mention that this same system was running 15.10 and working.

Thanks,

Did you install on the other machine from the same USB stick?

Either way boot off the stick and right at the start when you get the
screen showing a keyboard icon at the bottom hit a key and select the
option to check the files on the stick. Perhaps they are corrupted or
perhaps the PC does not like that stick.

Maybe even better put it on a DVD and try that if possible.

Ah, right. Well, that's an excellent step to try! Sorry to hear it didn't help.

The error appears to be concerning AHCI which means it relates to SATA
disks and their connections. That's something to check.

Aha. In that case it's worth giving 16.04 a try...

Did you install on the other machine from the same USB stick?
Yes.  I successfully booted to a laptop and another desktop and did an installation on the other desktop with the same hard drive and USB stick.

Either way boot off the stick and right at the start when you get the
screen showing a keyboard icon at the bottom hit a key and select the
option to check the files on the stick. Perhaps they are corrupted or
perhaps the PC does not like that stick.
I had already done that step too... there were no problems detected with that USB stick.

I also tried three different USB slots on the problematic computer.

Maybe even better put it on a DVD and try that if possible.
That's not quite as easy... I don't have an optical drive in that desktop.

Cheers,

       Dave
