On June 26th Stephane Graber, on behalf of the release team, announces
the availability of Ubuntu 14.04 (Utopic Unicorn) alpha one for the
following Ubuntu flavors: Kubuntu, Lubuntu Ubuntu GNOME, UbuntuKylin
and the Ubuntu Cloud. He shares released notes for each flavor and
also writes: "While these Alpha 1 images have been tested and work,
except as noted in the release notes, Ubuntu developers are continuing
to improve the Utopic Unicorn."

Daniel Holbach presents a proposal to make it easier for Lo'Cos to
share their news and stories by way of adding functionality to the
LoCo Team Portal which will then feed the stories to Planet Ubuntu. In

=== FOSSETCON in Florida - Coming Next September! ===
Jose Antonio Rey shares news that the upcoming FOSSETCON in Orlando,
Florida in September will be hosting an Ubucon on "Day 0" of the
conference and will have an Ubuntu booth at the main conference where
he will be helping to represent Ubuntu.
Adam Stokes presents the community with yet another option for
installing OpenStack, the Ubuntu Openstack Installer available via PPA
from the Cloud Installer project in Launchpad
(https://launchpad.net/cloud-installer). He gives instructions for how
to use this installer, and goes over the basics of what it's doing
with Juju to accomplish a single-machine install of OpenStack.
=== Ubuntu GNOME: Acting Team Leader & HR Sub-Team ===
Ali Linx of the Ubuntu GNOME team announces a couple of organizational
changes to the team. First that each sub-team in the project will have
a leader and acting leader to handle leadership tasks of the main
leader is unavailable, and secondly the creation of a Human Resource
sub-team focusing on recruitment of volunteers for the project.
The Lubuntu team reposts a blog post from the LXDE blog announcing
that the latest source code in our git repository can be compiled with
Qt5 which they're working to fix bugs in and notes that Qt4 will still
=== The Fridge: Community Donations Funding Report, Q1 2014 ===
Michael Hall, on behalf of the Ubuntu Community team at Canonical,
shares community funding details from the first quarter of 2014.
During this time over $17,000 was distributed to the community for
events and equipment related to Ubuntu development and promotion.
=== Svetlana Belkin: Doc Team Wiki Page Clean Up ===
Svetlana Belkin reports on progress on cleanup of the Ubuntu
Documentation Team wiki, writing: "We have cleaned it up by removing
some of the unwanted sub-pages, rewrote some of the pages to make it
easier for new people to get involved with us, and much more."
Michael Hall announces: "It was less than a month that we announced
crossing the 10,000 users milestone for Ubuntu phones and tablets, and
we've already reached another: 100,000 app downloads!" He goes on to
share statistics about the downloads, explains that all these
downloads are from folks who have installed Ubuntu themselves (since
no consumer version has been released yet) and reminds the community
that they're continuing to build the app development community through
their Pioneers program.

including: Unity8 UI updates on scopes and icons, availability in Mir
of "visbility" interface, change in unity-system-compositor & powerd

=== HP Publishes OpenStack on Ubuntu Reference Architecture ===
John Zannos writes about the recent release of "a technical white
paper titled: HP Reference Architecture for OpenStack on Ubuntu 14.04
LTS." He goes on to explain: "This white paper provides the
information HP clients need to start planning cloud deployments using
OpenStack on Ubuntu with HP servers. For clients who are beginning to
experiment with private cloud deployments, this white paper describes
the components and steps to get started."

Tom Macfarlane of the Canonical Design team shares details of the
design principles to the Ubuntu stand at last month's Mobile Asia Expo
in Shanghai. He shares sketches of proposals for layout, the final
layout sketches and finally photos from the finished product at the
Matt Hartley of Datamation shares tips for new users looking to switch
to Ubuntu. He begins by asking the motivation of the user switching,
before diving in to selecting a distribution, preferred applications,
and answering common questions such as the malware threat on Ubuntu

Christopher Tozzi shares commentary on the recent "series of subtle
but significant upgrades" that have been made on the main Ubuntu
website. He highlights the most significant tweaks as the launch of a
Chinese version of the site, and a new version of Ubuntu Insights. He
wraps up with a peek at future enhancements that are planned,
including updates to the web interface for Juju, a new partners
website and further development of their Chinese website.
=== Ubuntu's Ties to OpenStack Bring it to IBM's Servers and Beyond ===
Sam Dean of OStatic writes about Canonical's recent commitment to
provide full support for IBM POWER8 machines on Ubuntu Cloud. He also
says looking forward: "Ubuntu's evolution has become ever more tied to
cloud computing, and its development cycle is now even tied to the
development cycle of OpenStack. Look for OpenStack to play an ever
more central role in how Ubuntu is developed over time, and which
hardware platforms it is optimized for."
The Ubuntu MATE Remix community has announced an Alpha1 build of their
new MATE remix based on the upcoming Ubuntu 14.10 release. They share
known issues and encourage testers to report new bugs to the bug
tracker on Launchpad.
