=== Login regression for users with non-ASCII names ===

Colin Watson writes that an update made on 2020-08-13 caused many launchpad users with non-ASCII characters in their username to be unable to login. An apology is made for this regression and we're told a fix was implemented 2020-08-18. This post primarily explains what happened and how the regression occurred, and the change in testing that will prevent it into the future.

=== Ubuntu 16.04 LTS Systems Running Linux 4.4 Receive New Kernel Security Update ===

Marius Nestor alerts us to upgraded kernels available for Ubuntu 16.04 LTS systems using the 4.4 kernel. The upgrade fixes two listed CVEs for Ubuntu 16.04 LTS users, plus HWE enabled Ubuntu 14.04 ESM users. We are also told of a CVE which has caused newer 5.0 kernel patches for those using the GKE or OEM 5.0 kernels, with a note that due to an unavoidable ABI change, rebuilding any third-party kernel modules may be necessary.

=== Radeon's AMDVLK Driver Does Support FreeSync/VRR But The Option Isn't Widely Known ===

Michael Larabel tries to break the misconception that the official AMD Radeon open-source Vulkan driver "AMDVLK" does support for FreeSync / Variable Rate Refresh. Michael offers a theory that the lack of official release or announcement is why the misconception exists, but Michael links to the merge notice.

=== Not Got an Ubuntu 20.04 Upgrade Notification Yet? You’re Not Alone… ===

Joey Sneddon writes about Ubuntu 18.04 LTS users who are disappointed at not yet being offered the choice about upgrading to Ubuntu 20.04 LTS. The upgrade path opening is pending assurance that “people will get a good experience”.
