Hello all!
Well it's that time again and we need to turn our attention to the wallpaper for Oneiric. This cycle I thought it might be good to have this project run out of the artwork community. Is there someone out there who would like to step forward, start the process for submissions and deliver an amazing set of wallpapers? I'll keep a toe in and stay on as an advisor. What do we think? If not I am happy to keep it truckin' along. Iain -- ubuntu-art mailing list [hidden email] https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-art |

Hey Prateek
There isn't really a theme other than "great photography" :) We have been lucky in the last few releases. I think Flickr should still be the place we do this, it's got lots of great photograhers and designers already living there but am open to suggestions. UI Freeze is 25th August so we have until then to get our images into the release. Flickr is great for that. Martin, -- ubuntu-art mailing list [hidden email] https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-art |

So this time it's only about photography, right? No graphically
manipulated / designed from scratch, wallpapers? Heh, this sounds to me rather as a step backwards, not forward. But ok, I respect decision, whoever is responsible for this one. Ubuntu direction just continues to seem so wrong to me, in this last few months. Anyway, good luck with new wallpaper contest. Count me not for this one. ;) -- ubuntu-art mailing list [hidden email] https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-art -- ubuntu-art mailing list [hidden email] https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-art |

We'll welcome non photographic wallpapers just like we did in the last release although I'm not convinced that the Prateek's example is the way to go, not least because it doesn't feature the proper Circle of friends or logo type but also because it's adorned with Adidas logos and was clearly created as part of another campaign :) A wallpaper should try to be clean, simple and elegant. Someone's going to look at it for a long time. If no one's going to step forward then I'll happily run the process again. Let me know and we can get a blog post out this week to kick things off! Hi Iain
I'll be happy to help, but unfortunately don't know a lot about the process. If you could run things again, that would be greatly appreciated. On Wed, Jul 6, 2011 at 10:42 AM, ovi <[hidden email]> wrote:

Iain, Great news! I suggest folks may need some guidance on submitting desired and appropriate material. I have some thoughts on this subject I am willing to share and will create a wiki page as soon as time permits for discussion.
IMO, once this is document is agreed ( no later than 7/11 ) we should be ready.
Kind regards, John -- ubuntu-art mailing list [hidden email] https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-art |

John... Great idea pal, i for one am so new to all of this, i don't know how many passwords i have made and how many pages i have visited, then the legal restrictions on pic size too.. If we can't fully show the quality of work on offer, at this stage then it's kinda off putting thinking no one is gonna' see my 23 hours of non stop attention to detail. I will quite freely submit any pics to be adapted, used, or even changed greatly, by anyone but to be bounced at this stage probably is my fault, but the situation needs cleared up.. For us virgins!
Otherwise, i'm here 24/7 for ya all.....! Ross in Vlc.

Wallpapers probably shouldn't have the Ubuntu logo or Ubuntu name.

Urgh, this is such a troll.. Seems a very closed circle of friends, not very nice at all here.. No ping back as to my art, no mention if it's good, hell i didn't even mind if it was totally wrong and crap, but to have no feedback, is not the way to go.
I have been working 73 or more hours on a set of papers for ya, but i don't think i'm gonna continue. Count me out, i'm not flaming ya, i'm just bored with you city types.
Good luck. On 7 July 2011 04:31, Martin Owens <[hidden email]> wrote: Wallpapers probably shouldn't have the Ubuntu logo or Ubuntu name. -- ubuntu-art mailing list [hidden email] https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-art |

Hi Ross
Sorry to hear you're unhappy. I wasn't trying to come over as a troll and I don't think Martin was either. The wallpaper we were looking at was very clearly not an original work and the Ubuntu elements included weren't the up to date ones so I think it's fair to say that back and Martin's suggestion that we don't include these materials may well give the assets a longer shelf life. We're all working hard to get Ubuntu into the hands of as many people as possible and part of what I focus on with the designers here at Canonical is ensuring that use of our brand elements is consistent so that wherever someone comes across Ubuntu they know that what they're looking at is related to the core project - an incredibly powerful, free and open-source operating system. We can't go back and update old content but we can make sure that what we create now uses the proper assets as a starting point. That doesn't mean that we can't play with the assets but we should all start with the proper up to date materials. Iain On 07/07/11 08:44, ross richards wrote: Urgh, this is such a troll.. Hey Ross,
I'm not trolling you; I'm sincerely interested in you making great art and I will share my hard won wisdom[1] with anybody on the mailing list when I feel it might be useful. The core thing about art is that you can't be horribly hurt by honest critique and blame the culture of the community. We can't always be fluffy bunnies handing out meaningless platitudes; that's the way to never get better as a community. I'm sorry you were hurt by the critique. Martin[2], [1] For what little of it there is ;-) [2] Is not a city type && is a person class. On Thu, 2011-07-07 at 09:44 +0200, ross richards wrote: > Urgh, this is such a troll..
