can't delete kernel

John Carroll
Hello all,

I tried to install a software package and was not allowed. It tried to
remove some old kernels and was unsuccessful and therefore would not
install the software. I tried the cli and synaptic with same results.
How can I again install software. Below is output from the cli attempt
to remove

looks like you manually edited /etc/default/grub and made a bad entry
in there ... fix the bad line and run "sudo update-grub"

There is a tool to check grub.cfg for errors.

See the man or info page for grub-script-check for more details

HTH,

Hi Oli,

Thanks for the quick response.

Removing the added entry worked. Might be of some interest to some: I added the entry "iommu=soft" as recommended to get USB working on a newly installed motherboard and it worked. After deleting the entry USB still works, go figure.

thanks again,
john

Re: can't delete kernel

Ralf Mardorf-2
Hi John,

next time please don't reply in a field that is in the quote.

With or without the field (box), add your reply under the quote.

The field (box) is invisible for all of us, who do _not_ display
received emails HTML formatted.

Take a look at the mailing list archive, this is how your reply does
look like:

https://lists.ubuntu.com/archives/ubuntu-users/2018-August/294838.html

However, even if we would display the mails HTML formatted, this silly
box still remains as a part of the quote. Sure, because it's inside
this stupid box, it's easier to distinguish from the real quote, but
this doesn't make it much better.

Regards,
Ralf
