You should rather use Firefox from the launchpad ppa than downloading
a non-packaged version of it. Here's an explanation on how to do that:

If you downloaded the linux binary package from the website, you need to extract it somewhere say ~/firefox4
and then you can add a link at the top(if you're using gnome) Right click @ top panel->add to panel -> Custom Launcher -> Name: Firefox 4 command: ~/firefox4/firefox Although I do suggest going through ppa instead of binaries On Fri, Mar 25, 2011 at 9:42 AM, raymond house <[hidden email]> wrote: Hi everyone, I'm trying to put Firefox 4.0 in the computer,I have downloaded it and it opens all the files in the archive manager but then I don't know what to do with it, how do I get it to replace 3.6 that I have now?? thanks. -- 外に遊びに行こう! -- ubuntu-ca mailing list [hidden email] https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-ca |

Probably not. I have no idea what has been downloaded. If it
is the sources, they need to be build first. If it is binaries, I would not know for which Linux distro, kernel, libc etc it was build. Furthermore, we do not know if all libraries that FF4 depends on are already installed. The safest way to install software on an Ubuntu system is to use packages that are build against the particular Ubuntu release is to use the official archives, or a launchpad ppa where you can find packages before they are officially released for instance. The package manager will then ensure that all dependencies that are missing are installed too, and that the binaries are build against the right libraries. -Ralph On 03/25/2011 10:06 AM, Chris wrote: Can you not right click on the file and run with.... Ralph, when do you think this new version will be officially released, I checked synaptics and update manager and don't see it.

I am not sure if it will be officially backported to lucid or
maverick. I would assume it should be available
in natty when it comes out. However, since is my guess, I have not looked up any official statements. @James
If you mean in the default repository (and not a PPA) I don't think so. Versions of packages do NOT get upgraded after release (unless there are serious bugs). -- ubuntu-ca mailing list [hidden email] https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-ca |

Sorry meant the ppa, LTS = freeze everything so it remains constant, but will be available through the ppa

Right. If you want to wait a month*, FF4 will be the default in
Natty. Otherwise, you need to add the PPA. I'd always add the PPA. If you try to install from source or whatever, you'll need to do the security updates yourself. Update manager will pull the latest versions from the PPA. Darcy. * If you go LTS to LTS you'll have to wait a year for 12.04 to get FF4. Or add the PPA. 2011/3/25 James <[hidden email]>: > Sorry meant the ppa, LTS = freeze everything so it remains constant, but > will be available through the ppa > > On Fri, Mar 25, 2011 at 12:07 PM, [hidden email] > <[hidden email]> wrote: >> >> @James >> >> If you mean in the default repository (and not a PPA) I don't think >> so.
