install programs into wine

Bill Stanley
Hi,

I am new to wine and am having problems installing programs.  The
program I am trying to install is DAZStudio_4.5.0.114_Win32.exe which is
the windows for installer for DAZStudio.

The steps I followed are...

1 I installed Wine.  (No extra add ons for wine)

2. I configured Wine.  I want to emulate Windows 7.

3. Everything seems OK at this point.  To verify that wine is running I
ran the Notepad accessory and it runs OK.

4. I followed the instructions in the web-page document
https://help.ubuntu.com/community/Wine

5. according to the web-page

     a.  I open the terminal.

     b. cd to the folder where the install program is

     c. run the install program.

d the message I get is "command not found"

6 what am I doing wrong?  The terminal output is as follows:

****************************************************************

bill@aragorn ~ $ cd Downloads/DAZ-Studio-Windows

bill@aragorn ~/Downloads/DAZ-Studio-Windows $ ls

14812_GenesisStarterEssentials_1.3_trx.exe DAZStudio_4.5.0.114_Win64.exe
DAZStudio_4.5.0.114_Win32.exe Installation-Guide-Windows.pdf

bill@aragorn ~/Downloads/DAZ-Studio-Windows $ DAZStudio_4.5.0.114_Win32.exe
DAZStudio_4.5.0.114_Win32.exe: command not found

WS=> After some fooling around, I discovered that I have to get their content manager working.  After a lot of effort, I was able to get their manager running but it failed when it couldnt cd to a directory.  I checked and the directory is missing.  It seems that the installation is somehow faulty in that this critical directory was not made.    Maybe I'll try installing virtual box and running it from there.  As a last resort, I guess that I'll have to dual boot to Windows 7.  (I really hate to fall back on the last option because I haven't used Windows in many months.)  Thanks for any help I got!  It seems that the problem is with the install program.

Have you tried (find the exe then) "Right-Clink" on the Windoz exe you want to
run and choose "Run With Wine"?

To run a command in the current directory you need to put ./ on the
front (this is because for commands it looks in the PATH and the
current directory is not in the path), so you need
./DAZStudio_4.5.0.114_Win32.exe
I think it is better to use

wine DAZStudio_4.5.0.114_Win32.exe

rather than relying on the system working that out for itself (see
https://wiki.winehq.org/Wine_User%27s_Guide#How_to_run_Windows_programs_from_the_command_line
)

However, if you have not already done so, I suggest googling for
dazstudio ubuntu and find a blog from someone who has succeeded and
follow that.

WS=> Yes, I tried that.  Much of the problem is a faulty installation.
A Critical folder was not created and in that folder should be some
programs which are also missing.

I'm going to try to dual boot to Windows (I really hate that) and try to
install it there.  If I am successful,  I'll try booting to Linux,
mounting the windows partition and try to run the program under wine.
Is it possible to run stuff that way?

The point is that you were trying to install it by running the exe
file itself, rather than invoking the wine program with the exe as a
parameter.

There is no harm in following both routes.

I've not tried, I have run an install from a Windoz parition that worked, but I
failed trying to mount my email folder that was on Windoz for my Wine installed
mail client, maybe just me going about that wrong, I think that wne will expect
"all" the files to be somewhere in the Wine profile (e.g. on your ubuntu part)
