logg in as user root from the GUI

robert rottermann
Hi there,

to test things I normally use on my remote servers I installed a virtual
box with ubuntu mate (ubuntu mate because it handles my 4k laptop screen
with ease).

Now I would like to be able to log in as user root from the gui, so I do
not have to su into a bash shell to work as root.

how can I do that?

thanks

robert

To log in as root you just have to set a password for the "root"
account. To do this, first become root using "sudo -i bash", then run
"passwd". After that, you will be able to log in as root.

I have not actually tried this myself with the greeters, so YMMV. I
know it works at the shell level, but the greeters may have some
special anti-root provisions :-)

Running with a root passwords is generally considered bad practice, but
for a local virtual it's fine.

Regards, K.
