There are probably some other errors that get reported before the final failure message, and those are important.

Main reasons I've seen for that message is that either your internet connection is *not* fine (in which case trying
again later usually fixes things) or else your APT sources got messed up somehow and point to an invalid archive.

Most of the time I see that message because my DNS servers stopped working correctly, and that's usually because my
internet service provider is having trouble again.

I recommend you test your connection, first by pinging, then by
attempting to surf to various web sites, including a site or two you've
never visited before.

Other than that, how are you liking Ubuntu 16.04 ?

later,
Daniel

SEE:
https://askubuntu.com/questions/124017/how-do-i-restore-the-default-repositories

  • Remove the corrupted one

     sudo rm /etc/apt/sources.list

  • Open software-properties-gtk

     sudo software-properties-gtk

This will open software-properties-gtk and a new sources.list will be created automatically.

Then change the server to US or to any other server of your choice. You must enable repositories from the new dialog in order to create new sources.list .
